On Thursday we have Winter’s Turkey Smokies for our special. We have absolutely fallen in love with these smokies! There are made with all turkey breast meat (which means they are lean, only 1% fat) and are so tasty. We’re slathering them in crock sauerkraut from The Jungle and cooking up some Molasses Baked Beans to go with them. And continuing the theme, we are making our Roasted Beet Borscht as soup for the week.

The Butternut Squash Soup class is sold out. Look for more upcoming classes on the website.

Also, LOCAL 101 is coming together nicely. The speaker lineup is confirmed and we’ll post more information on the website. $15 Advance Tickets will be available for purchase starting this Wednesday at Forage.

You may know them as Magic Pan Bars or Better than Sex Bars, but we just know them as delicious and they are this week’s sweet. You know the bar that has a graham crust topped with pecans, chocolate chips, and coconut all held together with gooey sweetened condensed milk. No sweet tooth can resist them!

The flooring is in and the new room is coming together nicely for our first Forage Farm Table Dinner, just over a week away, on Wednesday, February 25th at 7:00 PM. We are featuring Buffalo Horn Ranch bison at this one. Seats are going fast so call Forage to book your seat or for more details go the Forage website and click on Farm Table Dinners.

A Roasted Squash Soup Cooking Class is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3rd at 7:00 PM. In this class you will learn how to make vegetable stock, a roasted squash soup, and the basics of vegetable soup making. Each participant will take home a litre of soup. Price is $40 and there are still a few spots left. Give Forage a call to book your spot.

Also for your calendar, mark the afternoon of Saturday, March 28th for the LOCAL 101 event Forage and Infuse Catering are hosting at the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Centre. LOCAL 101 is being created to give consumers an overview of the local food scene in Alberta and will be presented by farmers, cooks, and individuals. The event will cover topics for those interested in eating more locally in Alberta and will be followed by a chance to mix and mingle with many of the farmers who supply Forage. More information and tickets will be available soon.

Since we are going into the Family Day weekend I thought I would talk a little about families and farming. Farming used to be very much a family business. Children grew up learning about the land and how to create an income from it and then eventually the land was passed onto them to continue the business. Lately though, more and more kids are not staying on the farm. They have seen their parents struggle to make ends meet, farming has become a big business venture, and there is an abundance of better paying jobs out there. Even the smaller producers that we use here at Forage, who are doing things differently, are finding it hard to keep the farm in the family. Out of over 30 producers we use, we know of 2 that have the next generation in place to take over the land.

We are now offering Basil Pesto made with fresh basil from Alf’s Greenhouse and the other traditional ingredients – garlic, pine nuts, olive oil, and Parmesan Reggiano. It’s perfect for tossing with pasta or spreading on crostini and a 125 mL jar is $6. Look for it in our cooler.

We’ve added a couple pages on the website. One for the Farm Table Dinners and another one for Cooking Classes. The Buttermilk Biscuit classes we a big success so we will be offering other classes over the next few months. For more information on either of these two things, go to the Forage website.
